Decorating for the holidays can be a bit overwhelming. It seems like every store has a full line of seasonal decor that gets cuter and cuter each year. When you’re on a budget, buying decor every year sometimes isn’t feasible. Luckily, there are more options now to choose from – many of them affordable! Here’s some tips on how to decorate without breaking the bank.
Be Intentional
There’s absolutely no need to continue refreshing your seasonal decor. That’s why it’s so important to be intentional about what you’re buying. I’ve continued to reuse the pumpkins seen here for at least several years. The large white one is a plastic pumpkin I bought at Michael’s. I cut open a spot in the middle so I can add flowers. The smaller pumpkins were found in the dollar section at Target! To get the most use out of them, I bought them in fall colors: orange, yellow, cream, etc. that way I can use them for both Halloween and Thanksgiving. They’re also different sizes and textures which adds a bit more dimension once they’re set out. While they aren’t considered seasonal decor, candle holders are a great decor investment. These black candleholders are used year round and can be found at Target. The gold ones were passed down from my grandmother. The candles were found at HomeGoods!
Here’s a list of items I’d purchase if I was starting from scratch:
- Black Candle Holder Set
- Velvet Pumpkins
- White Pumpkin
- Halloween Wreath
- Witch Legs Stake
- Stacked Pumpkins

Use What You’ve Got
Here’s some other Halloween decor I’ve continued to use year after year. The trees were found in the dollar section a few years ago. I found the books, pumpkin, web and skull at Walmart! I save my spooky decor for the piano because once it’s decorated, it definitely gives Halloween vibes! The frames and trumpet stay on the piano the rest of the year. I’m sure there’s another clever way to decorate them, but for now I think they work just fine!
I’ve also had these pumpkins for a few years. As you can see, I have fewer of these black, purple and burgundy pumpkins and that’s because I really only use these for Halloween. Although I do use the larger cranberry ones for my Thanksgiving table scape. The black skull candelabra is so beautiful and was purchased at World Market for my Dia de Los Muertos display.
Moody Pumpkins
As far as outdoor Halloween decor goes, I only really decorate my doorway. I’m more of a Christmas girly, so I balance it by keeping Halloween pretty simple. Mostly everything here is from Walmart! Walmart has great Halloween decor! I purchased this cute, minimalistic garland, scarecrows, silver pails and witches stake legs there. The pumpkin towers were purchased at Target.
Outdoor Decor
As with all fun holidays, the most important thing is to have fun! Don’t overthink your decor.
