How to achieve ‘Traditional Christmas’ Aesthetic

Decorating for Christmas officially starts on November 1st. So if you’re looking for ideas on how to achieve a Traditional Christmas aesthetic now, then continue reading!

Start Early

First things first, start shopping early. You’ll start to find Christmas decor in stores late August. By Halloween, the early birds have finished their Christmas decoration shopping and will be putting them up in about a week. Ha! By Thanksgiving, you’re pretty much seeing all that stores will have to offer for the rest of the season. Take the rest of the month to get inspiration and assemble your final decor looks.

Inspo

Here’s what you’ll usually be looking for when it comes to traditional Christmas decor; green, red, gold, silver. I think in terms of decor, you should have some reindeer, stockings, Christmas villages, wreaths & greenery and of course, Santa! Your Christmas tree should be the focal point of your home and is the easiest place to give off traditional Christmas with ornaments, ribbon, tree skirt, etc. For my tree, I typically use white lights, red or cream ribbon, red & gold ornaments and a red tree skirt.

Christmas Village

I think one of the cutest ways to incorporate the traditional Christmas feel in your home is to add a Christmas village. It automatically makes your home feel cozy and there’s something so nostalgic and familiar about Christmas villages! I was lucky to inherit some of my mom’s treasured buildings but you can find affordable buildings, homes & characters everywhere! I purchased my trees at Target and added characters from the Dollar Tree. This year I found an ice skating rink, ice skaters and a reindeer barn at the Target dollar section!

Christmas Mantle

The mantle really ties everything together. Since our living room is where we spend most of our time, this is where I hang our stockings and include some of my favorite Christmas decor pieces. Here’s a look at how I decorated a few years ago.

Since last year was my daughter’s first Christmas, I decided to switch it up and refreshed our Christmas stockings. I splurged and got the embroidered ones from Pottery Barn and I do not regret it one bit. I’ll continue to use these every year. I also added framed Christmas posters that are actually gift bags! I’ll include a how-to on the blog every soon.

Here’s a closer look at the stockings:

Reuse Decor

You’ll hear me say this over and over again on the blog. When it comes to holiday decor, there’s no need to go out and buy all-new decorations. There’s nothing wrong with doing so, but do not feel the pressure to splurge when it’s just not in the budget. Traditional Christmas is easy to achieve when you reuse your decor. There’s so many decorations my mom passed down to me that don’t necessarily fit the aesthetics you’ll find on Instagram, but I don’t really care. I will always find a way to incorporate those into my home and make it my own.
